How to Manage Contractors

Managing contractors can be a challenging task, but with the right approach, it can be a rewarding one. In this article, we will guide you through some best practices for managing contractors.

Define Expectations and Deliverables

Before you start working with a contractor, it is essential to define clear expectations and deliverables. This will help to avoid any misunderstandings or surprises down the road. Make sure that both parties are on the same page when it comes to deadlines, quality standards, and communication.

Communicate Effectively

Communication is key when working with contractors. Make sure that you establish a regular communication channel that works for both parties. This could be through email, phone, or a project management tool. Regular check-ins can help to ensure that everyone is on track and any issues are addressed promptly.

Track Progress

Tracking progress is crucial when managing contractors. It allows you to monitor the project's status and identify any potential issues early on. Make sure that you set up a system for tracking progress and that both parties are aware of it.

Provide Feedback

Providing feedback is essential to ensure that the contractor is meeting your expectations. Make sure that you provide feedback regularly and constructively. This will help the contractor to improve and deliver better work.

Why is ESG data expensive?

The costs of collecting, analyzing and storing data are not cheap. And unlike financial data, there is no standardized process for determining ESG scores. The complexity of ESG data and the lack of standardization in the process for assessing environmental, social and governance factors also makes it difficult to compare companies on these metrics. Regulators are trying to make ESG information more transparent by mandating that companies disclose them alongside their financials, but this is still materializing globally. Traditional providers such as MSCI or Refinitiv employ armies of analysts to get this data from corporate disclosures (if it exists) and then normalize that data and provide it back to you. This is a very expenive process, with lots of quality control, and importantly - because this data is not disclosed very frequently (companies typically disclose ESG related data annually), there is less incentive to have a continuous subscription to a ESG data feed, along with risk of information leakage. All of this results in very expensive, and limited annual contracts.

Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we create and consume ESG data, which address many of the issues above - but that is a topic for another day.
